We microchip horses for many reasons. Theft, loss, run away, shows, identification, disaster, herd management.

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice. We numb the injection site, and insert the syringe into the nuchal ligament along the neck. It will not slip and is a permanent form of identification for your horse.
Included with the implant of each microchip is enrollment into a national tracking system. If your horse is lost or stolen, any veterinarian, shelter, or other professional with a scanner can call the system and report the location of your horse. In some situations you may find your stolen horse, but other person claims it is their horse. How do you prove a brown horse is yours? A microchip is the answer.
During a disaster such as fire or flood, you may not have access to your legal ownership papers, therefore preventing you from retrieving your horse from a shelter. With a microchip the shelter can verify your identity and return your horse safely back to you within minutes.
Many shows are requesting microchips for control purposes.
Registries now have a line on the certificates for the microchip number.
