Your HEALTHY alternative to dry baled hay

Is the feed value for Chaffhaye higher than dry hay?
Yes. Chaffhaye is cut at optimal plant maturity, then, within hours it is chopped and compressed into air-tight packaging. Fermentation is initiated, preserving more than 90% of the nutritional value of the crop. The fermentation adds beneficial enzymes and microflora. In conventional hay making, a pasture is first cut and left to dry in the field. As the forage dries it reaches a moisture level of under 40%. Combined with nutrient losses from storage and transport, even “Good Quality” hay can easily lose 20% to 30% of its nutrient value.
Why does the price per ton seem higher than dry hay?
A 50# bag of Chaffhaye equates to a nutritional value of 80 to 120 pounds of “Good Quality” hay.
Chaffhaye contains molasses. Is this OK for my horse?
Three tablespoons of low-sugar molasses is added to Chaffhaye to initiate fermentation. Nearly all of the molasses is converted by the
fermentation process into beneficial acids that preserve the forage quality. The average sugar levels are around 5.1% and average starch levels are 3.1%. These levels are substantially below the requirements for a Low Non-Structural Carbohydrate Feed.
I found white patches on my Chaffhaye. What is this?
These are ‘colonies’ of yeast created as a by-product of the fermentation process. Most probiotics are yeast-based and are used to reestablish healthy digestion and to bolster the immune system after stress, travel, wormers and antibiotics. Yeast aids in the
digestion of certain nutrients and are generally readily eaten by the animal.
What is the shelf life of Chaffhaye in unopened bag? Once opened?
Unopened in its air-tight package, Chaffhaye can be stored 2 years. Once opened, Chaffhaye should be treated as a fresh feed and used within 7-14 days depending on climate. Store out of sun and flap the plastic over the end to prevent drying out. A horse uses a bag every 3 days so opened containers are normally never an issue.
Will Chaffhaye make my horse "hot" or “jumpy”?
Chaffhaye is highly unlikely to make your horse "hot" or "jumpy". The most frequent cause of “jumpiness” is a high amount of starch. Chaffhaye’s average starch levels are 3.1%. Chaffhaye provides slow release energy that is primarily derived from its digestible fiber. Due to it’s “pre-digested” state, Chaffhaye also spreads digestion more evenly throughout the system so spikes in energy levels are unlikely.
My horse prefers the dry hay over the Chaffhaye. Why?
It's like offering a child candy or vegetables. They will always choose candy because they like the sugar content. But that doesn't make it the healthy choice. This is more common when weaning a horse from dry alfalfa which is so high in sugars already.
I've heard that moist feeds should not be fed to horses because of the possibility of mold. Is this true?
Chaffhaye is processed within hours of harvest. Once compressed into the bag to remove the majority of oxygen, the fermentation process drops the pH to below 4.5. Botulism can not grow in acidic conditions. The fermentation process uses up any residual oxygen in the bag. With no oxygen, molds can not grow.
Chaffhaye is an all natural solution to many equine problems that can be addressed with better nutrition. Chaffhaye is made by carefully selecting and harvesting premium alfalfa at peak leafiness to maximize nutrients, palatability and digestibility. Within hours of harvest, Chaffhaye is chopped, lightly misted with molasses, and double compressed into air-tight bags sealing in that pasture freshness. In the bag, the hay undergoes a natural fermentation, similar to the digestive process in the hindgut of a horse. The process converts the forage into a “pre-digested” feed with live yeast and beneficial bacteria not normally found in dry hay, pellets, or cubes. Through fermentation the proteins and sugars are cut in half from dry form. Chaffhaye is not a sweet feed, the molasses acts as a food source for the beneficial bacteria that do the work of fermentation. Chaffhaye facilitates greater digestion in the foregut of the horse where the bulk of proteins, fats, starches, vitamins and minerals are absorbed. Chaffhayes’ probiotics keep bacterial gut flora healthy for improved immune response and addressing stress related activities such as traveling and competition.
For economic reasons we no longer sell Chaffhaye. Sorry.
The soft moist consistency makes it easy to chew and enhances nutritional absorption so there’s less manure (up to 50% less) and less intestinal fill reducing hay belly in horses of all ages.
Compare the TDN (Total Digestible Nutrition) of Chaffhaye at 65-70% to that of dry hay averaging 35%!
Young animals can eat sooner taking some strain off the mother.
Horses with sensitive teeth can eat pain free.

The 50# bags are easy to handle plus the weatherproof packaging allows outdoor storage and a shelf life of 2 years with no nutrition loss. About the same size as a bag of shavings. One pallet is a whole ton since the hay is double compressed into the bags, so it takes up a thrid of the space as a ton of baled hay. Hauling hay on the trailer to shows, camping, vets, or anywhere couldn’t be easier. We can haul a ton of hay on top of our trailer. Feeding time is a new easy experience. We have a bowl for each horse which makes feeding time so easy to pick up all the bowls, fill them at the scale by the feed bags, then just slide them back into each horses stall till next feeding. No hay down our shirts, itching eyes, sneezing, heavy bales, and no hay on the ground. And no tarps! If it is windy, rainy, hot, or cold, it doesn't matter. Hard to imagine right?
Chaffhaye has been tested and is certified to be weed free and suitable for use in environmentally sensitive areas
A primary benefit of feeding Chaffhaye is the guaranteed nutritional analysis. With this information, you can design a feed program for your horse that is consistent with it's dietary needs. The recommended ration to start with is 1.5 pounds of Chaffhaye for every 100 pounds of horse. This means a 1000# horse eats 15 pounds per day. But you must consider factors such as energy consumption based on workload, lifestage, metabolism, and desired weight or size of horse. Chaffhaye makes it easy to adjust the rations up or down to achieve your nutritional goals for each horse in the barn individually. Weigh your feed for best results. We buy hanging fish scales for $15 at any big variety store. As with all feed changes, you should gradually transition your horse to Chaffhaye over a period of 7 to 14 days. Start with 2 pounds the first day and gradually increase the amount as needed. Due to the dense nutrition in Chaffhaye, we typically feed 25-28% less than baled hay. It is important to allow the horse's system time to adjust to the reduced feed amount.
For maximum freshness, open the bag along the top with a 3 sided cut so that you have a flap. Remove the amount that you need, close the flap over the remainder and store out of direct sunlight.
Through it's natural fermentation process, Chaffhaye develops large quantities of yeast. On occasion, the yeast will form colonies that are visible to the naked eye. These yeast colonies may be fed to your horse. Yeast in your horse's diet is known to aid in digestion, enhance absorption of nutrition, stimulate growth of "good" bacteria, regulate pH in gut and enriches milf for healther foals.
Save $$$ when you buy in quantities. One Pallet is 40 bags.

Price per ton cannot be compared directly to dry hay as the moisture content and digestive properties are not "apples to apples".Figure your current cost per month to feed your horse then compare the cost per month for Chaffhaye depending on the pricing level you buy. Keep in mind, time spent cleaning stalls, and money spent on disposal of manure will be usually be cut in half. Also there is no dry loss with Chaffhaye, and horses don't dip it in water buckets because it's already soft. So waterer maintenance is also reduced greatly.
